The FBI’s Dallas office announced this week that Operation Soteria Shield, a month-long investigation aimed at rescuing children from online sexual exploitation, led to the arrests of more than 240 suspects across North Texas.
The FBI said the operation also resulted in the rescue of 109 children. Authorities said the 244 people who were arrested are suspected of engaging in the production, distribution and possession of child sexual abuse material, according to a news release.
FBI Dallas said in the release that the operation, conducted in April, was run with the help of the National Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and was jointly managed by the FBI Dallas Division, Dallas Police Department, Plano Police Department, Wylie Police Department and Garland Police Department.
“The coordinated efforts of all agencies involved in Operation Soteria Shield serve as a powerful demonstration of unwavering dedication in the battle against online child exploitation,” Wylie Police Chief Anthony Henderson said. “By exposing the darkest corners of the internet, this operation has targeted predators who seek to harm vulnerable children.”
The release also states that investigators seized extensive amounts of digital evidence, including terabytes of illicit data stored on electronic devices. The FBI said that additional evidence may lead to more arrests as those materials go through further analysis.
“Online exploitation of children is one of the most insidious crimes we face as a society,” Plano Police Chief Ed Drain said. “Our work is far from over, but this effort has made our communities safer and brought hope to those who need it most.”
The FBI said the investigations involved over 70 local police departments including Tarrant County agencies like the Fort Worth Police Department, federal agencies, prosecutors and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
“Operation Soteria Shield was a massive team effort and a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish when we unite around one clear mission: protecting our kids and holding offenders accountable,” Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said.
