A suspect is in custody after stealing a police SUV and sending officers on an interstate police chase through North Texas cities early Wednesday morning, authorities said. 

The incident began after Grand Prairie police officers pulled over a Cadillac just after midnight that police said was “driving erratically” and with no headlights on Interstate 20, KDFW-TV reported.

Two suspects were initially detained after they ran into the woods. The Grand Prairie Police Department, in a statement, said one of the suspects suffered minor injuries after being caught by a police dog and he was placed in the back seat of a police Tahoe with no partition. 

Before he could be treated by medics for his injuries, Grand Prairie police say, the suspect managed to “shimmy” his handcuffed hands from behind his back, under his legs and to the front of his body. 

Then he hopped into the front seat of the police Tahoe and drove away while still handcuffed, according to the police statement. 

Police said they used spikes to disable the Tahoe and detain the suspect once again. WFAA-TV reported the chase, which reached speeds over 100 mph, ended in the Dallas suburb of Oak Cliff when the suspect crashed the police SUV near Interstate 30 and Westmoreland Road. 

The Tahoe rolled down an embankment. Police have not released the suspect’s name nor his charges. He was injured in the crash and taken to a hospital.
